PTINs: Who Needs Them, What Are the Requirements, & When To Get It

It is now preparer tax identification number (PTIN) renewal season. Please renew your PTIN by the end of the year. Before you begin the PTIN requirements process, be sure to review the list of information you will need for getting a PTIN.

Logging Into Your Online Account

You will notice some changes when you log in. All of your information remains the same, but the system has a new look and feel because the IRS recently redesigned the website for ease of use.

If you can’t remember your User ID or password, use the “Forgot User ID” or “Forgot Password” links. You will be asked to enter the email address associated with your account and the answer to your secret question.

NOTE: If you aren’t sure of your PTIN account login, try your most common email address as your User ID.

If you’re a Registered Tax Return Preparer:

You’re required to take 15 hours of continuing education in 2012. On your renewal application you must certify that you’ve taken or plan to take your CE this year. Be sure you use an approved provider and give them your name and PTIN as they appear on your PTIN account.

NOTE: You will not see your CE credits in your PTIN account at this time.

If you’re a Prospective RTRP:

You must become an RTRP or Enrolled Agent by December 31, 2013. Compare the credentials for both RTRPs and EAs by visiting IRS.gov. Reserve your slot today for the Registered Tax Return Preparer test using your online PTIN account (under “Manage My PTIN Account”). Or opt to take your career to another level and become an Enrolled Agent.

You are also required to take 15 hours of continuing education in 2012. On your renewal application you must certify that you’ve taken or plan to take your CE this year. Be sure you use an approved provider and give them your name and PTIN as they appear on your PTIN account.

If you’re an Enrolled Agent, CPA, Attorney, Supervised Preparer or Non-1040 Filer:

You must renew your PTIN for 2013 if you plan to prepare federal tax returns in 2013 or if you are an enrolled agent.
