What You Need to Know about an EFIN.

What is an EFIN?

An EFIN is an Electronic Filing Identification Number. The EFIN is used to identify the location from where an e-file was sent.

How to get an EFIN number?

You can get your EFIN through the IRS’ website at e-services. There is a registration process followed by an application process which includes a lengthy background check. Federal Direct will help you through the entire process!

How long does it take to get an EFIN?

During non-peak tax season, this process can be as quick as a few weeks. The background check is what takes the longest at approximately 45 days.  As we get closer to tax season, this process can take much longer.

Why do I have to do a background check?

The IRS wants to make sure that this responsibility can be shouldered by the applicant. While it is important to disclose any and all convictions, only certain ones will cause a rejection. A felony for check kiting, for example, is something that could potentially cause a denial.

Is there any recourse if my EFIN is rejected?

Yes, there is an appeal process that we can guide you through if your EFIN application is denied.

My IRS EFIN was assigned. Now what?

Now that you have an Electronic Filing Identification Number, you can begin to e-file. But first, be sure to get or renew your PTIN!
