If you are not familiar with the acronym ITIN, you should be. It is the tax identification number the IRS can issue to an undocumented immigrant who is not eligible for a social security number, but has a need to file a tax return. ITIN stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and the IRS started issuing them in 1996 in response to the large influx in undocumented workers present in the United States. Why should this be of interest to you and your tax office? There are an estimated 11 million + undocumented aliens living in the U.S. and many of these individuals are in your area and are potential clients of your tax office. While these immigrants might be in the country illegally in the eyes of the department of immigration and other arms of the federal and local governments, the IRS wants them to file tax returns! Federal Direct offers ITIN training and support so you can turn this growing segment of the population into paying customers. We will train you on processing returns for ITIN holders, and assist your clients needing to get an ITIN assigned to them. Along with training and supporting your tax office’s activities within the immigrant tax services arena, we will also help you become an IRS approved application center for issuing ITINs. Be sure to talk to a Federal Direct account rep and see if becoming a Certifying Acceptance Agent is right for your office.
